I am not on board with the Bucks either trading Sessions or letting him go for the Mid Level Exception(MLE). The rumors of Sessions going to the Knicks via sign and trade or through a MLE offer. My question is why would the Bucks do it? Sessions is a 6’3” point guard, with a 2008-09 Player Efficiency Rating(PER) of 17.65 , when he was playing the point the PER was 20.6, and his two year Adjusted +/- ranks him among the top five point guards in the league. If he played exclusively at the point, he would rank among the top five point guards in PER.
Sign and trade candidates. It is doubtful the Knicks would take Gadzuric or Redd’s contract off our hands, so I am not sure there is any sign and trade that benefits the Bucks. Wilson Chandler would be about the best option, but do the Bucks really need to add another player to the Alexander, Mbah a Moute, Irsan mix. We also will want to get Meeks some minutes next season and bringing in Chandler can affect that.
The Knicks outbidding the Bucks. Can the Knicks really afford to pay Sessions more than the Bucks? If they can only offer the mid level exception, why shouldn’t the Bucks go ahead and match? I know they want financial flexibility, but they also need some assets and I feel Sessions is a viable asset.
I am very hopeful for Jennings being a very good player in the league, but the truth of the matter is that he is only one year removed from high school. He is not a physical beast like Howard or Lebron were at that age, so his impact may take a couple of years. My feeling is the Bucks should do whatever they can to keep an asset like Sessions for the good of the team. If Sessions continues to play at his current level or improves, his future trade value will increase while giving Jennings time to get his feel for the league.
In sports, and specifically the NBA, it is fun to speculate about trades and free agency signings, but this is one deal I would prefer be left alone. The Bucks need to accumulate assets for the team’s future and if keeping Sessions means they pay the MLE, I am for it.
What do you think? Keep Sessions for MLE or less? If the Knicks did a sign and trade, what would you want?
